This guide outlines the process for growing pumpkins in containers, including selecting the right planter size, preparing the soil mix, planting seeds, and providing ongoing care such as watering, fertilizing, and supporting vines. It also offers tips on managing fruit size and preventing over-fertilization.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Select a spacious planter, ideally holding between 20 and 25 gallons or measuring 36 inches in diameter, and verify it includes drainage openings.
  2. Blend equal volumes of bagged soilless potting medium and compost, then incorporate the compost into the lower section of the vessel.
  3. For enhanced moisture retention, consider adding a scoop of garden loam alongside water retention crystals.
  4. Incorporate slow-release fertilizer into the earth, leaving approximately two inches of space between the soil surface and the container's edge.
  5. Spread a mulch layer over the surface to reduce evaporation and conserve moisture.
  6. Plant three to four seeds in each vessel, then reduce the number of sprouts to one or two once they develop their second pair of true leaves.
  7. Construct a robust support structure for the vines if space is tight, and fashion a supportive sling from materials like panty hose to cradle the growing fruit.
  8. Water the plants regularly to satisfy their high hydration needs, and apply a complete fertilizer with trace minerals every few weeks.
  9. Prevent excessive nitrogen application, and if aiming for larger pumpkins, prune two of every three flowers to control the number of developing fruits.
