About this
Discover simple methods to keep your fall pumpkins from rotting too quickly, including cleaning, applying bleach or vinegar solutions, and using petroleum jelly on cut edges to seal in moisture.
Tips
- Pre-clean the pumpkin with cool soapy water using a soft brush or cloth, then rinse and thoroughly dry it.
- Carve your pumpkin thoroughly, removing all seeds, strings, and gooey parts from the interior.
- Use a mild bleach solution (1 tablespoon per quart of cool water, or 1 part bleach to 10 parts water) to spray or soak the pumpkin for about 8 hours to reduce mold and rehydrate.
- After the bleach treatment, coat all exposed cut edges and inside guts with petroleum jelly to seal in moisture. Warning: petroleum jelly is flammable, so skip this step if using real candles.
- Alternatively, preserve naturally by spraying the carved pumpkin with a mixture of 1 part vinegar or hydrogen peroxide to 2 parts water to inhibit mold.
- After the natural spray, rub a thin coat of vegetable, olive, or coconut oil onto all carved edges to lock in moisture. Warning: these oils are flammable; skip if using real candles.
- Limit handling of pumpkins, especially the stem, as hand oils speed decay. Always lift by the sides, not the stem.
- Elevate pumpkins off the ground to improve airflow and deter bugs and critters.
- Give daily care by spritzing with the preservation solution (bleach or vinegar mix) a few times a week. If the pumpkin droops, submerge it in cold water for 30 minutes to 1 hour, then dry thoroughly.
- Sprinkle natural insect deterrents like citronella oil, lemongrass spray, or ground cinnamon cloves around the base of your pumpkins.
- Avoid freezing or excessive heat. Bring pumpkins inside before a freeze, keep them out of direct sunlight, and avoid real candles; use battery-powered lights instead. Ideal temperature is 50-60°F.
- Consider etching your pumpkin instead of carving it; etching damages less and extends longevity. Painting pumpkins makes them last even longer.
- Plan display times: Uncarved/painted pumpkins last 4-8 weeks (display early October), etched designs last 10-14 days (display around Oct 18-21), fully carved pumpkins last 5-7 days (display Oct 25-28).
