This Halloween puff pastry intestine recipe uses two frozen pastry sheets, your choice of filling, and an egg wash to create a festive, twisted treat. After rolling, sealing, and chilling the dough, bake it at 400°F for 20 minutes until golden. Add gory details with food coloring and a final drizzle of sauce for a spooky finish.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Allow the frozen pastry sheets to soften following the manufacturer's instructions. Prepare a baking tray by covering it with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Heat your oven to 400°F.
  2. Lightly dust your work surface with flour and roll each pastry sheet into an 11 x 14-inch rectangle. Slice each rectangle into three long strips or four shorter ones. Moisten the short edge of one strip with water, then press the short end of another strip against it to join them. Repeat this process until you have two continuous, lengthy ribbons of dough.
  3. Distribute your chosen filling evenly along the middle of each dough ribbon. Fold the edges of the pastry over the filling, sealing the seams tightly to encase the mixture.
  4. Lay one dough ribbon onto the prepared tray, twisting and curving it to resemble a coiled organ. Use the second ribbon to extend the shape as needed.
  5. Chill the assembled pastries in the refrigerator for 10 to 15 minutes, or in the freezer for 5 minutes. Once chilled, apply an egg wash made from one beaten egg and a splash of water over the entire surface.
  6. Use a toothpick to etch extra lines and textures into the dough before it bakes. For a gory effect, blend a few drops of red food coloring with one or two drops of blue food coloring, then dab the mixture into the crevices with a small brush.
  7. Bake the pastries for approximately 20 minutes, or until the pastry turns a rich golden brown.
  8. Once out of the oven, add a final touch by drizzling or splattering ketchup for savory fillings, fruit topping for sweet varieties, or another red sauce to enhance the bloody appearance.
