Learn how to create a pirate makeup look that balances rough edges with glamorous touches. From stubble and smudges to smoky eyes and red lips, each step brings your pirate character to life. Perfect for Halloween or costume parties.

Directions

  1. Many male pirates sport some type of facial hair, either natural or applied. A bit of stubble, a full beard, or a goatee really sells the look. To create stubble, use a sponge-tipped applicator or a cosmetic sponge to dab dark makeup onto your face. Blend it out so it looks like a shadow.
  2. For extra drama, apply a thick layer of black eyeliner encircling your eyes.
  3. If a rough-and-tumble pirate is your goal, add some smudges of dirt using brown face paint or eye shadow on your cheeks, around the eyes, and on the forehead. Blend those smudges with your finger or a sponge to keep them natural.
  4. Start with a foundation that perfectly matches your natural skin tone. Want a sun-kissed look? Choose a bronzer instead.
  5. Define your eyebrows with a pencil that's close to your brow color. Defined brows will make your eyes appear more sultry.
  6. Apply a white or very pale eyeshadow just under your brow bone to highlight it.
  7. Sweep a smokey gray or dark brown eyeshadow over your eyelids and blend thoroughly. Even if you plan to wear an eye patch, do both eyes—you might want to take the patch off later.
  8. Use black eyeliner to line both your upper and lower lash lines.
  9. Finish your eyes with two generous coats of black mascara.
  10. Apply a natural-looking blush to your cheeks, blending it seamlessly.
  11. For lips, choose bright red if you have fair skin, or deep red if you have a darker complexion.
  12. Outline your lips with a liner that matches your lipstick—defined lips are essential for a complete pirate lady look.
