This project guides you through creating a Chinoiserie Halloween pumpkin by first prepping the pumpkin with a white base and drawing a spiral grid. You'll then fill in the grid with medium paint, add intricate motifs like pagodas or flowers, and use lighter and darker shades to create depth and highlights. An alternative floral branch design is also included for variety.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Start by protecting the pumpkin's stem. Carefully apply masking tape around the base of the stem, then wrap the rest of it using paper and more tape. Spray the entire pumpkin with flat white paint, adding a second coat if needed for full coverage. Let it dry completely before peeling off the tape.
  2. Mark four evenly spaced points around the base of the stem and four corresponding points on the pumpkin's bottom. Lightly sketch a spiral line connecting each top mark to its matching bottom mark using a pencil. Then, draw another set of spirals in the opposite direction to create a crisscross pattern.
  3. Fill in the sketched lines using the medium shade of your acrylic paint. Since pumpkins have a naturally uneven surface, don't worry about achieving perfect straightness; slightly wobbly lines will look natural.
  4. Sketch chinoiserie motifs inside the diamond shapes formed by the lines, choosing designs that match your artistic comfort level, such as pagodas, lanterns, or floral patterns. Fill the lower diamond sections with a basic circular motif. Once satisfied with your pencil sketches, trace over them with the medium paint shade.
  5. Introduce depth and shadow using the darkest paint shade. Apply this color to two inner sides of the diamond shapes and to one side of your drawn design elements.
  6. Use the lightest paint shade to add highlights on the sides opposite the shadows. Let the artwork dry completely before showing off your creation.
  7. For an alternative design, sketch random branches using the darkest paint. Scatter circles at the ends of these branches, then use the medium shade to paint petals around each circle, starting from the outer edge and dragging the paint inward toward the center.
