Transform plain faux pumpkins into adorable yarn-wrapped decor. Prep by removing stems and cutting holes, then paint to match your yarn. Choose from four wrapping styles, create rustic stems from craft paper and twine, and add simple bows or leaves for a charming finish.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Start by taking off any price tags and pulling out the artificial stem from your faux pumpkin.
  2. With a craft knife, carve a hole in both the top and bottom of the pumpkin. The diameter should be about one to two inches—go bigger if you are working with chunky yarn.
  3. To prevent the pumpkin's original color from showing through the yarn, give it a coat of paint that matches your yarn color.
  4. Pick one of the four yarn pumpkin designs listed below and follow its detailed instructions.
  5. To craft stems, cut a 3-inch-wide strip from a roll of craft paper. Fold one end over and then roll the entire strip tightly. Secure the edge with hot glue. Then, glue one end of jute twine to the top of the paper roll and wrap the twine around, covering about two-thirds of the stem. Trim the twine and glue the end down. Insert the stem into the top hole of the pumpkin; it should be snug, but you can add extra hot glue for a tighter hold.
  6. Finish your yarn pumpkins by tying a small bow with jute twine and attaching it to the stem. For extra charm, you can also add a decorative leaf.
