Create eerie outdoor draperies using cheesecloth aged with black tea. After soaking and drying, attach the fabric to poplar strips and mount them on your porch. Add tattered holes and runs for a ghostly effect.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Measure the height and width for each panel, then cut the cheesecloth to size using a tape measure and scissors or utility knife.
  2. Using a mitre box and saw, cut poplar strips (1/4-inch-thick 2x4s) to match the width of the fabric panels.
  3. Boil water, pour it into a bucket, and add several bags of black tea to create a staining solution.
  4. Submerge the cheesecloth in the tea mixture and let it soak overnight to achieve an aged, dingy look.
  5. Remove the cheesecloth from the bucket and drape it over a bannister, fence, or door to dry completely.
  6. Once dry, use a staple gun with 9/16-inch staples to attach each cheesecloth panel to its corresponding poplar strip.
  7. Staple the poplar strips to the porch overhang, securing the draperies in place.
  8. For a tattered, ghostly effect, cut random holes in the fabric with scissors or a utility knife, then gently pull the fabric to create runs.
