This tutorial shows how to create a giant mouth and eyes for your house using wood and cardboard. The mouth hangs without hooks, and the eyes are attached with Command strips. All materials are affordable and the project is easy to customize.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Bought the most affordable sheet of wood at Home Depot for about $15. Originally intended larger teeth, but asked them to cut the 4'x8' sheet down to 3'x8' so it could fit in my car (no truck!).
  2. Drew the design freehand.
  3. Used a saw to cut out the shape.
  4. Applied a thick, messy coat of acrylic paint.
  5. Shaped the teeth, leaving extra space at the top that would be hidden behind the house when hung.
  6. Added a bit of yellow around the gum area.
  7. Then used brown spray paint, blending one tooth at a time with a sponge while the acrylic was still wet to achieve a smooth blend.
  8. Added red spray paint to the gums and blended further, then applied more red spray paint to the teeth for a bloody effect.
  9. Finished with a bit of black spray paint around the edges.
  10. Avoided hooks or nails by using the lip inside the columns—left a small edge on the wood to set it in place, resulting in no damage.
  11. For the eyes, since I couldn't use nails, I used cardboard cake circles as a base.
  12. For tracing, I used a plastic plate for the eye shape, a spray paint can for the pupil, and a water jug for the colored part.
  13. Colored the eyes with permanent markers.
  14. Used two different shades of green.
  15. Added a bloodshot effect.
  16. Spray-painted the edges with red and black.
  17. Since the eyes are cardboard and will be outdoors, I sealed both sides with clear packing tape (not shown).
  18. Used Command strips to hang the eyes without damaging paint. They've been up for about a week through storms and wind and are holding well.
