Create a spooky yet sweet spiderweb cake using just marshmallows and fondant – it's easier than it looks!
Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at thecakeblog.com.
This Halloween cake is covered in white fondant then wrapped in homemade marshmallow spiderwebs. Simply microwave marshmallows, stir until cool, then stretch and drape the sticky strands over your cake. Finish with a spider decoration for a creepy-crawly effect.
Ingredients
Directions
- Apply white fondant to your cake(s), covering them completely.
- Put your marshmallows in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for 30 seconds.
- Stir the marshmallows carefully – they will be very hot and can cause painful burns.
- Keep stirring the mixture.
- Continue stirring until the marshmallows have cooled enough to safely touch.
- Now things get messy and fun. Take a small piece of marshmallow with both hands and pull it into a long, thin, stringy strand – much longer and thinner than you might think possible. (It’s tricky to photograph with sticky hands, but aim for very thin.)
- Begin wrapping the marshmallow strand around your cake in all directions – up, down, diagonally, and around. There’s no perfect pattern for a spiderweb, so just start wrapping. Take it easy at first; thinner strands and a lighter touch work best.
- Keep pulling, stretching, and draping marshmallow strings in every direction you can imagine.
- Repeat the process on the second cake tier, then stack the tiers on top of each other.
- Add more marshmallow strings to both tiers, letting some drape from the top tier down to the bottom. Finally, place a spider with long, spindly legs on your web. Finished!
