You'll need

Directions

  1. Assemble your decorating materials: choose pumpkins in various sizes and shapes, a carving knife (optional for cutting stems), scissors, gloves, glitter, strobe lights, ribbons, glue, marker pen, tracing paper, blow drier, Mr. Potato Head kit, pushpins, recyclable plastic items, sturdy paper, nontoxic markers, stickers, glitter glue, duct tape (including black), black tissue paper, construction paper, silver and gold glitter glue, jewelry wire, nontoxic paint, mop string or fiberfill, scary Halloween stickers, spider webs, plastic spiders, white gauze, googly eyes, and free pumpkin stencils.
  2. Decorate Mr. Potato Head style: take a Mr. Potato Head kit and place its eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and feet onto a small pumpkin. Alternatively, create your own facial features using pushpins with recyclable plastic items (like water bottle caps) or sturdy paper cutouts decorated to look like eyes, nose, and mouth.
  3. Use household craft items to adorn your pumpkin: with nontoxic markers, stickers, glitter glue, and duct tape, create unique designs. For example, make a traditional jack-o-lantern face with black duct tape; wrap a pumpkin in black tissue paper and add a cat or bat cut from construction paper with glitter glue; draw a spooky face with markers or paint and attach hair made from mop string or fiberfill; cover with scary Halloween stickers; wrap in spider webs and add plastic spiders; or wrap with white gauze and attach googly eyes for a mummy look.
  4. Use pumpkin stencils to draw or glitter your design: secure a stencil onto a large round pumpkin. For a glitter version, apply glue to the pattern area, sprinkle glitter over it, let it dry slightly, then remove the stencil. For a drawn version, use colored markers or paint to trace the stencil design directly onto the pumpkin.
