Ingredients
Directions
- Set the oven to 180°C with the fan on, and prepare two baking sheets by lining them with parchment paper.
- Unfold the puff pastry sheets, keeping them on the paper they come with. Gently roll over them with a rolling pin to smooth out any creases.
- With a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut one whole sheet and half of the second sheet into rectangles about 4 by 2.5 inches. Slice the leftover half sheet into long, narrow strips. Reroll any pastry scraps to create additional shapes.
- Place the pastry rectangles in the fridge for 5 minutes to chill.
- Fill a piping bag with the vegan Nutella and pipe a dollop onto the center of each rectangle. Alternatively, you can just spoon and spread it. Add a few thin slices of fresh banana on top.
- Lightly brush dairy-free milk along the edges of the pastry to help seal it. Be careful not to overfill, as the filling may leak during baking.
- Arrange the pastry strips over the filling in a zigzag pattern to mimic a mummy’s wrappings. Repeat for each pie. Press the strips down firmly with your fingers so they stay in place as the pastry puffs up in the oven.
- Brush the entire pastry surface with more dairy-free milk and sprinkle with caster sugar to encourage browning.
- For best results, bake one tray at a time to allow room for puffing—usually 6 pies per tray. Place in the center of the preheated oven and bake for 15 to 18 minutes, until the pastry turns golden and flaky.
- Take the pies out of the oven, let them cool a bit on the tray, then move them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- If the white chocolate buttons are larger than desired, use the flat end of a piping tip to press down and cut smaller circles from each button.
- Using leftover Nutella in a piping bag, pipe a tiny dot in the center of each chocolate circle to form the pupil.
- Ensure the pies are completely cool before attaching the chocolate eyes, as warmth will melt them. Press an eye onto each pie, then dust with icing sugar if desired.
- Enjoy the hand pies at room temperature or lightly warmed.
