Hauntingly Beautiful Halloween Decor: Vintage Vignettes Home Tour
Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at followtheyellowbrickhome.com.
About this
A Halloween home-tour post from Follow The Yellow Brick Home showing how to build 'hauntingly beautiful' Halloween vignettes from vintage and thrifted treasures instead of gory props. The author walks through a living-room dresser display, a music-room piano and bust arrangement, and staircase decor, sharing the stories behind each piece. It also hosts and schedules the Hauntingly Beautiful Decor Halloween blog hop and link party.
The plan
- Borrow ideas freely from other blog hop participants — the blindfolded bust statues came from Larissa's Welch House 1900 tour
- Skip full-house decorating: share a September early fall tour and a November late fall tour, and highlight Halloween vignettes instead
- Decorate with the weekly music students in mind, adding small magical details children notice
- Layer a few Halloween touches over everyday vintage decor rather than starting from scratch
- through Tuesday, October 31st — Visit the Hauntingly Beautiful Decor Link Party, live through Tuesday, October 31st, to link up your own Halloween ideas
- Friday, October 27th — Friday, October 27th hop schedule: Welch House 1900 (via Follow The Yellow Brick Home), Hallstrom Home, Reinvented Collection
- Saturday, October 28th — Saturday, October 28th hop schedule: Follow The Yellow Brick Home, Hip And Humble Style, Belle Bleu Interiors, Peonies and Orange Blossoms
- Next stop on the hop after this post: Deborah at Hip And Humble Style
- Put off the full music room makeover, possibly until Christmas, and just add Halloween touches to the piano for now
- Plan to add Halloween touches to the 120-year-old antique organ in time for Trick-Or-Treat when family visits
Decoration ideas
- Move a shabby antique dresser to a hard-to-decorate spot by the staircase and style the top with old clocks, vintage frames, brass candlesticks and small trinkets for everyday decor
- Make a thrifted painting the focal point of a vignette — score one cheaply when the eyes have been painted out
- Add googly eyes from a Halloween craft stash to a thrifted painting for humor instead of gore
- Display an old magnifying glass with a creepy critter (fake bug) stuck underneath as a prop
- Use antique photographs in Halloween vignettes, including vintage carnival girl and Gypsy Romani photographs
- Cut out little witch's hats and place them on antique photographs of unknown people for mystery and humor
- Use vintage jewelry in vignettes, especially pieces with black, green or purple stones, to add sparkle and magic
- Pin an antique brooch onto a velvet pumpkin to make a blingy Cyclops 'monster'
- Scatter vintage style tags across the dresser top so they read as little coins from a Halloween carnival
- Keep everyday piano decor and simply add extra candles, faux spider webs and blindfolds to vintage bust statues
- Dress a vintage bust (Beethoven) as a pirate — 'Captain Beethoven' — to greet visitors and music students
- Tie small blindfolds around little boy and girl busts (improvised from black basketball shoelaces)
- Use dried roses or spent flowers as 'dead' flowers with a touch of faux spider webs and cozy candlelight
- Place a skeleton holding a candle just inside the French doors to greet guests
- Hang crooked antique picture frames at the top of the stairs for a 'nightmare' effect
- Repurpose a thrifted folk art metal sculpture of a woman's dress as a headless, hand-less 'apparition' at the top of the stairs
- Chalk paint and dark wax an antique mirror above the piano and add hand crafted music candles to soften its creepy look
- Reflect a 120-year-old antique organ (family heirloom) in the music room mirror for extra Halloween atmosphere
- Use broken vintage clocks to suggest midnight in a vignette
- Show off nearly 100-year-old French doors as a backdrop between rooms
- Prop a thrifted deer figure ('Buck') in a silly pose for a lighthearted spooky touch
Food & drink
- Grab a tasty treat and fill your favorite mug with hot tea, coffee or apple cider (or any other concoction you want to brew up) while enjoying the rest of the Halloween blog hop
Activities
- Tour all the other blogs on the Hauntingly Beautiful Blog Hop for more Halloween decor inspiration
- Look up blindfold chasing games played at Halloween parties of yesteryear, the idea behind the blindfolded bust statues
- Let music students discover and giggle at Captain Beethoven as they arrive for lessons
- Play up humor in vignettes — googly eyes on a thrifted portrait — so decor never goes 'to the dark side'
- Link up your own Halloween decor at the Hauntingly Beautiful Decor Link Party through October 31st
- Watch the video recap slideshow of the post for sneak peeks of more Halloween decor to come
