This Halloween treat combines black caramel-coated apples with a creamy apple pie milkshake. Start by making the black caramel apples, then blend a milkshake with vanilla ice cream, apple pie filling, and warm spices. Garnish the glasses with black caramel and top with the poisoned apples for a frightfully delicious drink.
Ingredients
Directions
- Remove the wax coating from store-bought apples by washing them in hot water, then drying thoroughly.
- Take out the apple stems and insert sticks in their place.
- Set the apples aside or chill them in the refrigerator.
- In a saucepan, combine heavy whipping cream, light corn syrup, light brown sugar, butter, and salt. Cook over heat for 15–20 minutes until the mixture reaches 240°F on a candy thermometer.
- Remove the caramel from heat and stir in vanilla extract and black food coloring using a wooden spoon. Add food coloring gradually until you get a deep black color.
- Let the caramel cool to 190°F, then dip each apple into the black caramel.
- Allow excess caramel to drip off, then place the dipped apples on parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
- Let the apples set while you prepare the milkshake.
- Garnish the rims of your glasses with leftover black caramel sauce.
- Place the glasses in the freezer to chill while you make the milkshake.
- In a blender, combine milk, vanilla ice cream, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and apple pie filling. Blend on high until smooth.
- Drizzle more black caramel sauce inside the chilled glasses, pour in the milkshake, add a black straw, and top each with a black caramel apple.
