This Halloween-themed science experiment uses orange paper cups as mini pumpkins. Kids (with adult help) carve faces into the cups, then add baking soda and food coloring before pouring in vinegar for a fizzy, foaming reaction that simulates a bubbling pumpkin.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Use a pencil to sketch jack-o'-lantern faces onto the orange paper cups, then have an adult cut them out with a craft knife.
  2. Slice the bottom circle off each cup so it is open at both ends.
  3. Place the cups upside down (large open side down) into a shallow plastic bin.
  4. Inside each cup, add 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 3 drops of orange gel food coloring—adjust the drops for desired vibrancy.
  5. Pour vinegar into the cups and watch the fizzy, foaming reaction erupt!
