Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at savvysavingcouple.net.
This semi-homemade Halloween cake starts with a store-bought white cake. You'll microwave tinted frostings to create drips, then swirl orange frosting on top. Decorate with gumballs, shimmer Sixlets, candy eyes, and black pearls for a monster eye effect.
Ingredients
Directions
- Take the store-bought 7-inch round white cake out of its packaging; note that it is a two-layer white on white cake.
- Separate the vanilla frosting into two bowls that are safe for the microwave.
- Place the orange frosting into another microwave-safe bowl.
- Heat each bowl of frosting in the microwave for 20 seconds.
- Stir neon green food dye into one vanilla bowl and neon purple into the other, mixing well.
- With a small spoon, gently drizzle the green frosting around the top edge of the cake to create a drip effect.
- Repeat the same dripping process with the purple frosting.
- Spread the orange frosting across the top of the cake in a swirled pattern.
- Use a pastry squeegee to blend the colors on the top surface only, taking care to leave the drips undisturbed.
- After finishing the frosting, begin adding the gumballs for decoration.
- Press white gumballs into the frosting in a strategic pattern, then do the same with the orange gumballs.
- Distribute the green and purple shimmer Sixlets evenly around the cake.
- Fill any remaining gaps with candy eyes, followed by black pearls.
- Optionally, add plastic non-edible spider decorations for extra effect.
