This Halloween party game turns simple materials into racing spiders. Kids paint coffee cream tops, add pipe cleaner legs and pom-pom heads, then race them on sloped strings. It’s a creative, active game that lets children explore gravity and competition.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Set up a covered work area, then paint the rounded coffee cream tops black using fabric paint (or spray paint). Let them dry completely.
  2. Open the lids. Glue four segments of black pipe cleaner to each side of the lid, so you have eight legs total.
  3. Close the lids. Glue a black pom-pom on top for the head, and attach two wiggle eyes to the pom-pom.
  4. Cut a small piece from a paper or plastic straw and glue it vertically onto the top of the lid.
  5. If you worry about parts falling off during races, keep strong black duct tape handy to quickly reattach the straw if needed.
  6. When ready to play, tie one end of each 10-foot twine to a low anchor like a chair leg or soccer net pole.
  7. Thread the free end of the twine through the straw on the spider.
  8. Secure the far end of the twine to a taller object, or have a child hold it up high.
  9. Make sure one end is elevated so the string slopes downward, allowing the spider to slide.
  10. Position the spiders at the top of the string, then shout 'Go!' to start the race.
  11. Release the spiders and watch them zip down the strings.
  12. Enforce one rule: kids must not push the spiders during the race.
  13. Children can lift the yarn higher to use gravity, or invent other creative ways to help their spider cross the finish line first.
