This Halloween cake starts with a simple boxed mix, then gets a dramatic makeover with black buttercream and a glossy chocolate ganache drip. Candy eyeballs add a playful, eerie touch that's perfect for any spooky celebration.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Set your oven to the temperature specified on the cake mix box and grease two 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, combine the cake mix, eggs, oil, and water, stirring until the batter is smooth. Split the batter evenly between the two prepared pans.
  3. Bake the cakes according to the package directions, then let them cool completely. If the tops are domed, use a serrated knife to level them.
  4. To make the frosting, beat the softened butter until it's light and fluffy. Slowly add the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and a splash of heavy cream, beating until smooth.
  5. Add black gel food coloring a little at a time, mixing well after each addition, until the frosting reaches a deep black shade.
  6. Place one cake layer on a turntable, spread a layer of frosting on top, then add the second layer. Frost the entire cake with the black frosting, smoothing it with an offset spatula. Refrigerate for 20 minutes to set.
  7. For the chocolate drip, heat the remaining heavy cream until it just begins to steam, then pour it over the chocolate chips. Let it sit for a minute, then stir until smooth and glossy. Mix in the corn syrup for extra shine.
  8. Allow the ganache to cool slightly, then spoon it around the top edge of the cake, letting it drip down the sides naturally for a spooky effect.
  9. While the drip is still tacky, press candy eyeballs onto the cake in desired spots. Chill the cake until you're ready to serve.
