This project guides you through painting artificial pumpkins black, dyeing gauze or fabric, and wrapping it around the pumpkins to create a colorful mummy look. Key steps include securing googly eyes above the center, wrapping the dyed material while leaving the eyes visible, and separating the strips for a defined, textured finish.
You'll need
Directions
- Apply a solid coat of matte black paint to your artificial pumpkins, ensuring full coverage.
- Mix your chosen dye in a small container, such as a mason jar, following the package instructions. Submerge the gauze or fabric strips, stirring occasionally, and let them soak for approximately twelve hours. Once dyed, put on gloves, rinse away any surplus color, and hang the material to air dry completely.
- Position large googly eyes slightly above the midpoint of each pumpkin. Apply a generous amount of hot glue directly to the center of each eye to secure them firmly against the curved surface.
- Secure the starting end of the dyed gauze to the underside or back of the pumpkin using hot glue. Use a tool like a pencil to press the fabric into the adhesive, keeping your fingers safe from the heat.
- Continue wrapping the gauze around the pumpkin, making sure to pass over the area between the eyes and around them at least once. Aim to cover nearly the entire surface while leaving the eyes exposed. Secure the final end with glue and let it set.
- Gently pull apart the dried gauze strips with your fingers to create gaps, allowing the black base to show through and add depth to the mummy effect.
