Our own summary of the original by Michaela Kenkel — the full post and photos live at anaffairfromtheheart.com.
These ghostly pop tarts are made from pie crust, filled with cherry jam, and baked until golden. After cooling, they're glazed with a simple powdered sugar icing and decorated with black icing faces. They store well for days and are perfect for Halloween.
Ingredients
Directions
- Set your oven to 375°F and place parchment paper on a baking sheet.
- In a small bowl, whisk the egg white with the water until combined to create an egg wash.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pie crust. Use ghost-shaped cookie cutters to cut out shapes, then arrange them flat on the prepared baking sheet.
- Place about 1 teaspoon of cherry jam in the center of each ghost cutout, keeping the jam in the middle. Dip a pastry brush in the egg wash and brush it around the edges of each cutout.
- Brush another ghost cutout with egg wash, then place it egg-wash-side down on top of a jam-covered cutout. Use the tines of a fork to press the edges together, sealing in the filling.
- Brush the tops of each assembled pop tart with egg wash.
- Bake for 15 minutes, until the tops turn light golden brown. Take them out of the oven and let them cool completely before glazing.
- For the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until you reach your preferred consistency. (Optional: Microwave the glaze for 10–20 seconds to help it set faster.) Then drizzle over the cooled pop tarts.
- Decorate each pop tart with black decorator icing to create eyes and a mouth. Use a small decorating tip or a toothpick to refine the details.
- Once the icing has set, serve immediately. Store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
