Learn how to achieve perfect clown makeup in nine steps. This tutorial covers everything from washing your face and applying white base to setting powder, eyebrows, eyes, lips, and creative details. Whether you want a classic clown or a creepy look, follow along for a transformative effect.

Directions

  1. Begin by washing your face thoroughly to remove any dirt, oil, or leftover makeup. You want a completely clean canvas.
  2. Prepare your white makeup base. For water-based options like Ben Nye Aqua Paint Cloud White, dip your brush or sponge in water and mix it with the paint. Adjust the consistency until it's like thin paint. If you're using an oil-based clown white, you'll apply it differently, but water-based is easier for beginners.
  3. Once your white paint is mixed, apply it all over your face. Don't be shy—coverage should be thick and even. Pay extra attention to your nose, as it tends to wear off quickly. Keep going until you look properly clown-like, but stop before you look like a wedding cake.
  4. If you want to set your white base before adding color, now is the time. Use a powder puff to gently dust setting powder over the white areas. Focus on your forehead, nose, and chin, which are prone to rubbing off. Note: This will dull any colors applied later, so only do this if you plan to keep the white matte.
  5. Color your eyebrows using a water-activated crayon from the Caran D'Ache palette. Dip the crayon in water, dab off excess, and draw over your brows, coloring them in like a child. If you go outside the lines, wipe away with a damp tissue and touch up with white paint. Then, apply mascara to your brow hairs, brushing them upward toward your nose to create a wild, crazy look.
  6. Using the same water-activated crayons, choose colors for eyeliner and eyeshadow. Dip the crayon, dab, and apply along your lower lash line and above your upper lashes. Smudge as desired. Keep your eyes closed until the paint dries. For a sharper look, add black eyeliner. Then apply fake eyelashes using standard technique.
  7. Apply lipstick to your lips. For a two-tone effect, outline and fill your lips with red crayon, extending slightly beyond your natural lip line. Then add black lipstick to the inner portion of your lips. Blend the black into the red with your finger to create an ombré appearance. Add more red on top if needed.
  8. Personalize your clown makeup with creative details. Use black eyeliner or other colors to draw hearts, triangles, freckles, a sun on your forehead, a red dot on your nose, tear drops, extra eyebrows, star bursts, smile lines, wrinkles, red cheeks, a mole, big hearts over eyes, or eyeballs on eyelids. Let your imagination run wild.
  9. If you haven't already set your makeup, now is the time. Use a powder puff to gently press setting powder all over your face. Start with your forehead, then nose, cheeks, and chin. Be careful around your eyes to avoid dulling your lashes. This final step will help your makeup last longer.
