This guide walks you through creating a unique Halloween t-shirt using a wooden sign as a stencil. You will apply adhesive to the sign, position it on the shirt, and use a diluted bleach solution to lighten the fabric around the design. The process involves careful spraying, waiting for the color change, and proper rinsing to achieve a crisp, custom look.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Apply a thin layer of washable adhesive spray, such as basting spray, to the reverse side of your wooden Halloween decoration. Alternatively, a glue stick works just as well. Ensure the surface feels tacky but not overly wet.
  2. Slide a large sheet of cardboard inside the garment to create a barrier against the back. Position the shirt on a protective surface like a plastic sheet or trash bag in a well-ventilated space, preferably outdoors away from wind.
  3. Press the prepared wooden piece firmly onto the front of the shirt, ensuring the adhesive side makes full contact with the fabric.
  4. Adjust your spray bottle to produce a fine mist, testing it with water first. Fill the bottle with a 50/50 mixture of water and bleach. Lightly mist the exposed fabric around the wooden shape, moving in a circular motion. Avoid saturating the material, as excess liquid can seep beneath the barrier and damage the design.
  5. Observe the fabric as the bleach begins to lighten the color. Wait a few minutes before adding more spray to see the true effect. After approximately five minutes, touch up any missed spots with a light mist, being careful not to over-wet the area.
  6. Let the treated shirt sit undisturbed for 20 to 30 minutes to allow the chemical reaction to complete. Once ready, carefully lift the wooden piece away from the fabric.
  7. Rinse the garment thoroughly under running water until the water runs clear and the entire shirt is saturated. Wring out the excess water, then launder and dry the shirt using standard machine settings before wearing it.
