This Halloween recipe turns ordinary breadsticks into creepy bone shapes, baked until golden and brushed with egg wash. Paired with a homemade marinara sauce that resembles blood, it's a fun and tasty treat for any spooky gathering.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, mix the yeast, sugar, and warm water (110°F). Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, olive oil, salt, garlic powder, and dried oregano. Stir well.
  3. Pour the yeast mixture into the flour mixture and stir until a soft dough forms.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  7. Punch down the risen dough, divide into small pieces, and shape each into a long thin breadstick. Pinch the center to create two bulges at each end, resembling bones.
  8. Place the breadstick bones on the prepared baking sheet. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Let cool on a wire rack.
  10. To make the marinara, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  11. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic; cook until translucent and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.
  12. Stir in the tomato puree and tomato paste until well combined.
  13. Add the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir well.
  14. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  15. If the sauce tastes too acidic, stir in 1 tablespoon sugar to balance. Adjust seasonings to taste.
  16. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Pour into serving bowls and garnish with fresh basil if desired.
  17. Serve the marinara blood dipping sauce alongside the breadstick bones.
