Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at craftingintherain.com.
This project shows how to make a large Halloween door decoration from foam blocks and discs. You'll shape pumpkins, apply a textured finish, paint stripes, and add vinyl lettering. LED lights and a burlap hanger complete the spooky display.
You'll need
Directions
- Begin by warming the StyroCutter, then draw two pumpkin outlines on the foam discs. Carefully cut along the lines to remove excess foam, then sandpaper the edges for a smooth finish.
- Apply Smooth Finish to the top and sides of the large rectangle and both pumpkin shapes. If the mixture seems clumpy while spreading, stir in a small amount of water.
- Allow the coating to dry completely, then apply a second layer to the rectangle's top, smoothing it thoroughly. For the pumpkins, draw curved grooves into the wet finish to create ridges. After drying again, lightly sand the entire piece.
- Paint the pumpkins orange and brown. On the large rectangle, measure and mark 2-inch wide stripes, then paint five of those stripes black.
- Apply the "Happy Halloween" vinyl lettering to the pumpkins. Using a glue gun, attach the two LED light strands along the perimeter of the foam board, and insert each battery pack into the foam from the back.
- Cut a length of burlap garland, glue it to the back of the foam board, and use it to hang the sign on your door. When dusk arrives, turn on the lights and admire your Halloween decoration!
