This Halloween graveyard fault line cake features chocolate layers with a crack-like chocolate frosting band filled with bone sprinkles, surrounded by green frosting. Top it with candy tombstones for a creepy cemetery effect. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
You'll need
Directions
- Stack the three 6-inch chocolate cake layers, spreading about 3/4 cup of chocolate frosting between each. Apply a very thin crumb coat of vanilla frosting over the entire cake, then refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Spread a band of chocolate frosting around the middle of the cake's side, about 1 inch tall. Use a bench scraper to smooth it.
- Press chocolate sprinkles onto the chocolate frosting band. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Mix green food coloring into the remaining vanilla frosting until you reach your desired shade.
- Fill a piping bag fitted with a plain ribbon tip (or a basketweave tip with a plain side) halfway with the green frosting.
- Pipe a ribbon of green frosting along the bottom edge of the cake, below the chocolate band, and another ribbon along the top edge, above the chocolate band. It's okay if they slightly overlap the chocolate. The green layers should be thicker than the chocolate. Then frost the top of the cake with green frosting.
- Gently smooth the green frosting with a bench scraper, being careful not to disturb the chocolate sprinkles.
- Carefully place bone-shaped sprinkles among the chocolate sprinkles on the chocolate band.
- If you have leftover green frosting, pipe a small border along the bottom edge of the cake using a star tip or plain round tip.
- Decorate the top of the cake with candy tombstones and additional bone sprinkles if desired.
- Keep the cake refrigerated until serving time, and refrigerate any leftovers.
