This haunted mansion bloody wedding cake starts with a white cake mix baked into a single or three-layer cake. A fluffy buttercream frosting is piped in swirls, then finished with dramatic red food coloring splatters for a gory effect.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Set your oven to 350°F to preheat.
  2. In a large bowl, stir together the white cake mix, 1 cup water, 3 egg whites, and vegetable oil.
  3. Whisk the mixture until it becomes smooth and free of lumps.
  4. Transfer the batter into a greased 8-inch cake pan.
  5. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  6. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool completely.
  7. Decide whether to keep the cake as a single layer or slice it horizontally into three layers.
  8. In a mixer bowl, cream together the softened butter and shortening until smooth.
  9. Add the vanilla extract and powdered sugar, mixing until fully combined and creamy.
  10. Pour in 1/4 cup water and beat on high speed for 3 to 5 minutes until fluffy. If needed, add more water one tablespoon at a time.
  11. Spread a thin layer of white frosting over the cooled cake.
  12. Fit a piping bag with a large star tip and fill it with the remaining frosting.
  13. Pipe decorative swirls all over the cake.
  14. For the blood splatter effect, you can either splatter the entire cake or splatter each slice after cutting.
  15. Dip a clean hand or a new toothbrush into red liquid food coloring, then flick it onto the cake to create splatters.
