This project guides you through creating a DIY Singing Busts display using a digital projector and pink insulation foam. By tracing projected images, cutting the foam, painting the busts white, and setting up a concealed stand, you can achieve a convincing Halloween illusion. The key is maintaining proper spacing between the display and the background to enhance the projected effect.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Play a video of the Singing Busts on YouTube and aim your digital projector at a large sheet of pink insulation foam. Adjust the projector's distance to achieve your desired image size.
  2. Trace the projected outlines onto the foam, making sure to fill in the solid areas for the heads. Keep in mind that portions of the original image are dark, so focus on the visible shapes.
  3. Refine your traced lines until the shapes look correct. If the bases need to be more even, use a paper template to guide your adjustments.
  4. Carefully cut out the shapes with a long craft blade. Leave the bottom edge intact so all the busts remain attached to the single foam sheet, which helps maintain proper spacing. Aim to slice through the material in one continuous motion for cleaner cuts.
  5. Apply white paint to the front-facing surfaces of the cutouts. You do not need to cover the sides or edges.
  6. Construct a support structure by reusing an old stand or setting up a folding table. Cover the support with additional pink foam to conceal it. Position the entire setup at least 10 to 15 feet away from any flat background to ensure the projection illusion functions correctly.
