Transform a plain wood plank circle into a festive fall door sign with a painted "Hello Pumpkin" design, framed by a wood bead garland and adorned with greenery, berries, and a pumpkin. This step-by-step guide walks you through cutting a stencil with a Cricut, painting, distressing, and assembling the decoration for a warm seasonal welcome.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Load the SVG into Cricut Design Space and resize it to fit your wood circle. Place stencil vinyl on your cutting mat and have the machine cut the design.
  2. After cutting, remove the excess vinyl from the letters using a weeding tool—you want the letter outlines empty so paint can fill them.
  3. Apply a base coat of paint to the wood plank circle; you'll likely need at least two coats for full coverage.
  4. Once the base paint is dry, wrap the wood bead garland around the circle's edge to measure, then snip it to the right length.
  5. Set the garland aside. Use transfer tape to carefully lift and position your stencil onto the painted wood circle.
  6. Add painter's tape around the stencil edges to create a clean boundary. Then paint the letters with your chosen color, applying a couple of coats so the color is bold after removal.
  7. When the paint is completely dry, slowly peel off the stencil to reveal the lettering.
  8. Optionally, distress the piece with a sanding block for a worn look.
  9. Flip the circle face down and hot glue each bead along the edge, adding glue to every bead for a secure hold.
  10. After all beads are attached, use the garland's twine to tie a knot at the top.
  11. Use wire cutters to snip small pieces of greenery, fall berry picks, and pumpkin stems as needed.
  12. Glue the greenery onto the circle first, then add the fall berries, leaving a spot for the pumpkin.
  13. When you're happy with the arrangement, glue the pumpkin in place. If you have a storm door, trim the pumpkin's back to avoid smashing.
  14. Finish by trimming the twine or adding a bow, then attach a hanger to the back. I stapled a ribbon for hanging.
