Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at whitegunpowder.com.
These homemade edible googly eyes are perfect for adding a fun, spooky touch to your Halloween desserts. Made from a simple icing with meringue powder and confectioners’ sugar, they require a short piping session and an overnight drying period. Once set, they can be used to decorate cookies, cupcakes, or any treat that needs a wide-eyed stare.
Ingredients
Directions
- In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a wire whisk or paddle attachment, start by mixing together 2 cups confectioners’ sugar, 2 teaspoons meringue powder, and 3 tablespoons of water.
- With the mixer on low speed, gradually add more water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the icing reaches a consistency that is not too thick or too thin.
- Increase the mixer speed to medium-high and whisk for 2 to 4 minutes, until soft, glossy peaks form.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or waxed paper. The icing should be thick enough to hold its shape but fluid enough to pipe into smooth, round dots.
- Pipe small white dots onto the lined sheet to form the eyeballs. Let them dry completely before adding the pupils.
- Stir black food coloring into a small portion of the remaining icing to make the pupils. Pipe a tiny black dot onto each white eye.
- Allow the googly eyes to dry for at least 12 hours before using them on any treats.
