Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at hgtv.com.
Start with a standard gingerbread house kit, then give it a Halloween makeover using purple and brown frosting, candy corn, chocolate treats, and creepy decorations. Add windows with eyeballs, cookie tombstones, chocolate spiders, a dead tree, and marshmallow fluff cobwebs to create a haunted house. Finish with a marshmallow ghost in the yard for the perfect eerie scene.
Ingredients
Directions
- Assemble your gingerbread house following the kit's instructions.
- Apply purple frosting to the side walls of the house.
- Spread brown frosting on the roof, then press chocolate cereal squares into it to look like shingles.
- Line the roof ridge with candy corn to create finials.
- For the front door, spread purple frosting on the back of a chocolate graham cracker, cut it to fit with a slight tilt, and attach it in place.
- Attach chocolate bar sections as windows, piping white royal icing along their edges to make them pop.
- Use royal icing to glue candy eyeballs onto the windows.
- Form a circle of candy corn above the door to mimic a stained-glass window.
- Color coconut flakes green with food coloring, then scatter them around the house to form grass.
- Halve chocolate-filled sandwich cookies, write “RIP” and “BOO” on them with brown decorating icing, and anchor them into the grass with a dab of brown frosting.
- Sprinkle crushed graham cracker around the tombstones to look like fresh dirt.
- Dip mini sandwich cookies into melted chocolate, attach candy eyeballs with a dot of frosting, and press them into the purple frosting on the house to form spiders.
- Pipe brown decorating icing around each spider to create legs.
- Dip a piece of grapevine into melted chocolate, then fix it to the yard with brown frosting to make a dead tree.
- Drape strands of marshmallow fluff over the house to resemble cobwebs.
- Position the marshmallow ghost in the front yard as the final spooky touch.
