These homemade googley candy eyes are made from royal icing using powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water. You pipe white eyeballs and add black pupils, then let them dry overnight. Perfect for decorating Halloween cupcakes, cookies, and more.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Cover each cookie sheet with a sheet of parchment paper so that the finished eyes peel off easily.
  2. In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the powdered sugar, meringue powder, and 1/2 cup of cold water on high speed for 3 to 5 minutes.
  3. Remove about 1 1/2 cups of the white frosting and place it in a separate bowl. Mix in 5 to 10 drops of black food coloring until you get the darkness you want.
  4. Load one pastry bag with the white icing and another with the black icing. Keep the bags upright in large cups until you're ready to pipe.
  5. Using the white icing, pipe small, medium, or large dots onto the parchment to form the eyeballs. You can also pipe some dots that touch each other for fun shapes.
  6. Once the first white dots are dry enough to handle (by the time you finish piping all the white), use the black icing to add a tiny dot as the pupil on each eyeball. Put some pupils in the center and offset others for variety.
  7. Let the candy eyes dry for 12 to 24 hours before using.
  8. Store the dried eyes in an airtight container to keep them fresh.
