Ingredients

Directions

  1. If making your own cake, bake it as directed and let it cool fully. (I used a boxed mix.)
  2. In a medium bowl, beat the butter until fluffy. Mix in the melted chocolate and cocoa powder thoroughly.
  3. Gradually add powdered sugar and mix well, then add milk one tablespoon at a time until the frosting is smooth and spreadable.
  4. Crumble the cooled cake into a large bowl.
  5. Mix in 1/2 cup of the prepared frosting with a wooden spoon. It will take a few minutes; the mixture should become less crumbly and start to hold together. If still dry after mixing, add 1-2 more tablespoons of frosting until a small squeeze holds its shape.
  6. Form 24 balls, each just over an inch in diameter. Roll them in your hands to round; don't stress about perfect shape, as you can smooth them after chilling. Once formed, place the tray in the freezer for 15 minutes.
  7. Remove from freezer and gently roll any balls that need smoothing. Return the tray to the freezer while you melt the candy melts.
  8. Melt the candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl in 20-second bursts, stirring between each, until smooth. Alternatively, use a double boiler on low heat, being careful to keep water out. If the chocolate isn't smooth, stir in 1-2 teaspoons of vegetable shortening or coconut oil.
  9. Take cake balls out of freezer. One at a time, dip one end of a cake pop stick into the melted chocolate, then gently push it into a cake ball without going all the way through. Repeat for all sticks. Freeze for 2-5 minutes to set the chocolate on the stick.
  10. If needed, remelt the chocolate before coating the cake pops.
  11. Coat each cake pop by dipping and twirling it in the melted chocolate until fully covered. Tap the stick on the bowl's side to remove excess. Place on a parchment- or silicone-lined baking sheet, or stick them into holes poked in a cardboard box to dry.
  12. Melt 2 tablespoons of chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl using the same method as before.
  13. Dip a toothpick's tip in the melted chocolate and draw faces on the cake pops.
  14. Pipe a green gel icing stem on top of each cake pop.
