This recipe guides you through making jack-o-lantern cupcakes by combining a chocolate cake mix with black food coloring for the base, creating a buttercream frosting, and forming cake pops from the leftover cake. The cake pops are decorated with orange icing to resemble jack-o-lanterns and then placed atop frosted cupcakes for a festive Halloween dessert.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Bake the chocolate cake mix exactly as the box instructs. Stir in roughly half a teaspoon of black gel food coloring until the batter is evenly tinted.
  2. Line a standard muffin tin with twelve paper liners. Fill each liner about three-quarters full using a large scoop. Pour the leftover batter into a greased round cake pan. Bake both batches according to the package instructions, then allow them to cool completely.
  3. Tint your prepared frosting with a touch of black gel food coloring, mixing until the color is uniform. Spoon the mixture into a piping bag and chill it for at least thirty minutes to help it firm up.
  4. Using an electric mixer, beat the room-temperature butter, powdered sugar, and cocoa powder together. Gradually add the whipping cream and continue mixing until the frosting is smooth and creamy.
  5. Crumble the cooled round cake into a medium bowl. Blend in two to three tablespoons of the prepared frosting, mixing until the crumbs clump together when pressed between your fingers. Set this mixture aside.
  6. Pack the cake-pop mixture firmly into your molds, ensuring the bottoms are smooth. Chill the filled molds for one hour to set the shapes. Repeat this process to create twelve total cake pops.
  7. Gently push the back of each mold to release the cake pops onto a sheet of wax paper. You can now either decorate them with orange icing for immediate serving or store them between layers of wax paper in the refrigerator until you are ready to assemble the cupcakes.
  8. Prepare the flooding icing and transfer it to a squeeze bottle fitted with a fine tip. Carefully squeeze tiny amounts of icing into the carved eye, nose, and mouth areas of the cake pops. Avoid overfilling the spaces. Use a toothpick to guide the icing into the smaller corners.
  9. Allow the icing to dry and set for approximately twenty-five minutes.
  10. Pipe a ring of frosting onto each cooled cupcake. Place one decorated jack-o-lantern cake pop on top of each frosted cupcake to complete the treat.
