These festive hand pies feature flaky puff pastry wrapped around a Nutella and banana filling, baked until golden. After cooling, they’re adorned with white chocolate eyes and a dusting of icing sugar for a playful mummy look. Perfect for Halloween parties, they can be served warm or at room temperature.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Set the oven to 180°C with the fan on, and prepare two baking sheets by lining them with parchment paper.
  2. Unfold the puff pastry sheets, keeping them on the paper they come with. Gently roll over them with a rolling pin to smooth out any creases.
  3. With a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut one whole sheet and half of the second sheet into rectangles about 4 by 2.5 inches. Slice the leftover half sheet into long, narrow strips. Reroll any pastry scraps to create additional shapes.
  4. Place the pastry rectangles in the fridge for 5 minutes to chill.
  5. Fill a piping bag with the vegan Nutella and pipe a dollop onto the center of each rectangle. Alternatively, you can just spoon and spread it. Add a few thin slices of fresh banana on top.
  6. Lightly brush dairy-free milk along the edges of the pastry to help seal it. Be careful not to overfill, as the filling may leak during baking.
  7. Arrange the pastry strips over the filling in a zigzag pattern to mimic a mummy’s wrappings. Repeat for each pie. Press the strips down firmly with your fingers so they stay in place as the pastry puffs up in the oven.
  8. Brush the entire pastry surface with more dairy-free milk and sprinkle with caster sugar to encourage browning.
  9. For best results, bake one tray at a time to allow room for puffing—usually 6 pies per tray. Place in the center of the preheated oven and bake for 15 to 18 minutes, until the pastry turns golden and flaky.
  10. Take the pies out of the oven, let them cool a bit on the tray, then move them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. If the white chocolate buttons are larger than desired, use the flat end of a piping tip to press down and cut smaller circles from each button.
  12. Using leftover Nutella in a piping bag, pipe a tiny dot in the center of each chocolate circle to form the pupil.
  13. Ensure the pies are completely cool before attaching the chocolate eyes, as warmth will melt them. Press an eye onto each pie, then dust with icing sugar if desired.
  14. Enjoy the hand pies at room temperature or lightly warmed.
