These old-fashioned apple fritters are made with Honey Crisp apples and a simple batter, then fried until golden and topped with a vanilla glaze. The recipe yields 10-12 fritters and is ideal for autumn snacking or dessert.
Ingredients
Directions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, ground cinnamon, and salt.
- Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Add 1/3 cup milk, the eggs, and applesauce. Stir until the batter is smooth and fully combined.
- Peel and dice the Honey Crisp apples into small pieces (not too tiny so you still taste them). Gently fold the apple chunks into the batter.
- Pour the canola oil into a deep pan or skillet and heat to 375°F. Carefully drop 1/4 cup of batter into the hot oil. Fry each side for about 3 minutes, until golden brown.
- Remove the cooked fritter and place it on paper towels to drain excess oil. Repeat with the remaining batter; you should get 10 to 12 fritters.
- Transfer all the fritters to a baking rack to cool.
- In a separate small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and 1/4 cup milk to make the glaze.
- Set a rimmed baking sheet under the rack. Pour the glaze over the fritters, repeating 2 to 3 times until all glaze is used.
