These old-fashioned apple fritters are made with Honey Crisp apples and a simple batter, then fried until golden and topped with a vanilla glaze. The recipe yields 10-12 fritters and is ideal for autumn snacking or dessert.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, ground cinnamon, and salt.
  2. Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Add 1/3 cup milk, the eggs, and applesauce. Stir until the batter is smooth and fully combined.
  3. Peel and dice the Honey Crisp apples into small pieces (not too tiny so you still taste them). Gently fold the apple chunks into the batter.
  4. Pour the canola oil into a deep pan or skillet and heat to 375°F. Carefully drop 1/4 cup of batter into the hot oil. Fry each side for about 3 minutes, until golden brown.
  5. Remove the cooked fritter and place it on paper towels to drain excess oil. Repeat with the remaining batter; you should get 10 to 12 fritters.
  6. Transfer all the fritters to a baking rack to cool.
  7. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and 1/4 cup milk to make the glaze.
  8. Set a rimmed baking sheet under the rack. Pour the glaze over the fritters, repeating 2 to 3 times until all glaze is used.
