This project uses recycled cardboard and orange wool to create pumpkin shapes. You'll wrap them with yarn, add spooky faces on one side, and hang them as a reversible garland perfect for both Halloween and Thanksgiving.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Create a cardboard template by tracing a tin can onto recycled cardboard, then squish the circle slightly to mimic a pumpkin shape. Add a small rectangular stem at the top. Cut out the template, then trace and cut 5 to 7 pumpkin shapes from cardboard.
  2. If you like, paint the stem of each pumpkin green. Alternatively, use a green marker, glue on a green paper stem, or wrap the stem with green wool.
  3. Make a small cut at the top of the cardboard pumpkin to hold the yarn end. Wedge the yarn into the cut, then start wrapping the orange wool around the pumpkin, rotating it as you go to keep the wrapping even. When done, tie the yarn around the stem, leaving a long tail for hanging.
  4. Cut jack-o'-lantern features (eyes, nose, mouth) from black paper or black felt. Glue them onto one side of the pumpkin to create a reversible decoration.
  5. Tie the yarn pumpkins to a length of baker's twine or hanging string. Hang the garland with the jack-o'-lantern faces visible for Halloween, then flip them to the plain side for Thanksgiving.
