Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at thebakerupstairs.com.
These rich chocolate cupcakes are topped with a marshmallow frosting, Peeps tombstones, bone candies, and crushed Oreo "dirt." A hidden toothpick keeps the marshmallows upright—just remember to remove it before serving.
Ingredients
Directions
- Set the oven to 350°F and place paper liners in 12 muffin cups. In a large mixing bowl, combine 3/4 cup sugar, 1/2 cup flour, 1/4 cup cake flour, 1/2 cup cocoa powder, 3/4 teaspoon baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Add 1/2 cup cold butter cut into pieces and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Beat in 2 eggs one at a time, then add 1/2 cup sour cream and 1 teaspoon vanilla, mixing thoroughly. Divide the batter among the lined cups, filling each about 1/2 to 2/3 full. Bake for 15 minutes, until the tops spring back when touched and a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Allow to cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat 1/2 cup butter and 3.5 ounces marshmallow cream until light and fluffy. Add 1 1/2 to 2 cups powdered sugar, 1/4 cup cocoa powder, and 1 teaspoon vanilla, and beat until smooth. Add more powdered sugar or 1-2 tablespoons half and half or heavy cream as needed for a pipeable consistency. Pipe the frosting onto the cooled cupcakes. Press a tombstone-shaped Peeps marshmallow and 2 bone candies into the frosting on each cupcake. For extra support, insert a toothpick behind each marshmallow (remove before eating). Sprinkle crushed Oreos over the tops.
