Discover creative ideas for a spooky outdoor Halloween display featuring witch scenes, graveyard setups, animatronic monsters, and eerie digital projections that will haunt your neighborhood.

About this

A personal blog post touring the author's outdoor Halloween yard display, built around a witches' gathering with a bubbling cauldron, a full graveyard scene with tombstones and a ghostly watcher, motion-activated bats and a pop-up witch, and a projected digital cackling-witch window display. Alongside the tour it explains how to anchor store-bought tombstones with rebar and wire, and lists every piece of equipment needed to set up the projected window display. It also names where each prop was purchased and how to time purchases to catch sales.

The plan

  1. Decide where to focus decorating effort, since most of the author's effort each year goes into the yard rather than indoors
  2. a few weeks after Labor Day — Hold off putting yard decorations out until a few weeks after Labor Day
  3. early September — Shop Grandin Road around the beginning of September when their Halloween items go on sale
  4. Buy wanted Halloween props early because the best items sell out quickly
  5. Check Amazon and Oriental Trading for similar props if the exact item is sold out
  6. Mark the exact floor spot where the projector tripod must sit for the correctly sized image in the window
  7. Move the projector out of the way when driving the car in and out of the garage
  8. 10:30 p.m. nightly — Plug the projector into a timer so the display shuts off at 10:30 each evening
  9. Leave the water-resistant speaker outside unless a storm is expected
  10. Place the pop-up witch's activating step pad under the doormat leading to the porch

Decoration ideas

  • Witches gathering around a bubbling cauldron: a set of 3 witches from Grandin Road plus a bubbling cauldron, set up near the street so walkers and golf-cart riders see it
  • Spooky graveyard scene: a wide front yard full of tombstones under the oak trees with the ghostly figure Eva (also from Grandin Road) keeping watch
  • Store-bought tombstones used instead of DIY ones because they are inexpensive and widely available
  • Motion-sensitive scary bats hung from the trees that swing and make noise when someone walks by
  • A pop-up scary witch by the front door (from Spirit Halloween) that startles anyone approaching, triggered by a step pad hidden under the doormat
  • Digital cackling-witch window display projected through the garage window so it looks like a witch and her cat are casting spells inside
  • Alternate digital display themes if witches aren't wanted: zombies, ghosts, creepy clowns and more

Food & drink

  • "Killer" Pumpkin Banana Cookies
  • Easy Monster Cupcakes for Halloween
  • Easy Graveyard Pudding Cups
