Transform your pumpkin into a work of art with these creative carving techniques. Whether you opt for a light-up design with drilled holes or a stacked creature made from gourds, these steps ensure a spooky yet stunning result. Follow along to create memorable decorations that will impress all your trick-or-treaters.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Prepare your workspace and gather the necessary tools: a keyhole saw, dry-goods scoop or spoon, paring knife, carving knives, hand saw, drill with a 1/4-inch bit, wooden dowels, battery-operated light or string of tiny white lights, and stencils if desired.
  2. Draw your design on the pumpkin skin before cutting. This ensures a clear guide and helps avoid mistakes.
  3. Cut a hole large enough to work inside. For a bottom-entry, turn the pumpkin on its side and use a keyhole saw to carve a round opening in the bottom. Alternatively, cut an opening on the side opposite the stalk.
  4. Use a scoop or tablespoon to remove the flesh and seeds from the pumpkin. Discard the innards or save seeds for roasting.
  5. Scrape the inner wall of the pumpkin until it is about 1/4 to 1/8-inch thick. This allows light to shine through evenly.
  6. For a light-up design: using a 1/4-inch drill bit, drill holes randomly across the skin or in a pattern (use tape as a guide). Work from the center outward.
  7. Thread a string of tiny white lights through the bottom opening. Insert one bulb into each hole, pushing it so the bulb extends slightly. Bunch the remaining lights inside, ensuring the cord and plug exit through the bottom.
  8. Plug the lights into a socket or heavy-duty extension cord. Stand back and enjoy the glow.
  9. To create pumpkin creature sculptures, carve heads from pumpkins and select body parts from gourds, butternuts, or other vegetables. Level the bottom of each piece so they stack securely.
  10. If body parts don't stay stacked, hammer wooden dowels into the flesh to assemble them. Before attaching the head, insert a battery-operated light or a jelly jar wrapped with white lights for illumination.
