Become a mythical satyr with this DIY costume featuring fur pants, horns, and hoof shoes.
Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at makeit-loveit.com.
Create a satyr costume with faux fur pants, black fleece horns attached via hair clips, and wooden hoof shoes. The pants use an exposed elastic waistband, while the horns are stuffed and wrapped with thread. Hooves are carved from basswood, painted, and glued onto slip-on shoes with a fur-covered fleece base.
You'll need
Directions
- Sew pants from non-stretchy faux fur fabric following the Simple Leggings tutorial pattern, but extend the length slightly past the knee and skip the hem.
- Make an exposed elastic waistband for the fur pants instead of hiding the elastic inside a casing.
- Cut two horn shapes from black fleece, each 4.5 inches tall and 2 inches wide at the base for a child size 4. Place them right sides together and stitch with a ¼-inch seam allowance.
- Flip the sewn horns right side out and fill with stuffing.
- Hand stitch the open end of the horn closed.
- Wind yellow or light-colored thread tightly around the horn, securing it with a few stitches at the top.
- Sew hair extension clips onto the base of each horn by hand so they can clip onto the head.
- Fashion goat hooves from lightweight bass wood by hollowing out the center to fit over a shoe. Carve lines and texture into the wood, then paint with black and gray to give a worn appearance.
- Attach a strip of elastic to the bottom of each wooden hoof using hot glue; this helps keep the hoof on the shoe.
- Apply hot glue inside the hoof, then slide the shoe in. Add extra glue blobs around the edges to secure.
- Cut a base piece from leftover fleece that will sit on top of the shoe, flush with the wooden hoof.
- Cut a piece of faux fur and glue it onto the fleece base, then glue the sides down to the shoe sole.
