This project guides you through constructing a wearable hot air balloon costume using woven chipboard for the basket, white ribbon for straps, and a mix of 9-inch and 12-inch balloons for the sandbags and headpiece canopy. The instructions detail cutting and weaving the board, assembling the basket, attaching the straps, and securing the balloons to complete the look.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Begin by slicing your chipboard or cardboard into 1.5-inch wide strips. You will need a total of 42 pieces: 10 cut horizontally and 32 cut vertically. Interlace these strips to create a woven panel measuring 80 inches long by 20 inches wide.
  2. Take your woven panel and fold it into quarters. Apply hot glue to the overlapping edges to secure them, forming a square basket that measures 20 inches on each side.
  3. Determine the length needed for the shoulder straps by measuring from the inner front edge of the basket, over your shoulders, to the inner back edge. Cut your white ribbon to this length and attach both ends to the basket using your hot glue gun.
  4. Blow up eight of the 9-inch white balloons to serve as the sandbags. Secure them around the base of the basket with hot glue.
  5. Inflate the remaining 12-inch balloons in various colors. Tie them firmly around your headband to create the balloon canopy for the headpiece.
  6. Put on your costume and prepare for takeoff!
