This guide walks you through creating a Rubik's Cube costume using a large cardboard box, black paint, and colored paper squares. You will paint the box, cut and arrange the colored squares, and add openings for the wearer's head and arms. The final result is a fun, recognizable costume that can be styled as either solved or scrambled.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Apply a coat of black spray paint to the cardboard container, paying special attention to the edges to minimize effort.
  2. While the coating dries, measure and cut nine squares from your colored paper for each of the five hues. For a 24-inch cube, each square should measure 7.5 inches by 7.5 inches to preserve the black borders, and you should round off the corners.
  3. Mark and cut openings for the wearer's head and arms. You can use a plate as a guide for the circular head cutout and sketch the arm holes by hand, or remove the top and bottom panels entirely to create shoulder straps.
  4. Secure the upper flaps of the box with hot glue to keep the top section firmly in place.
  5. Arrange the nine colored squares on one face of the box, ensuring they are evenly spaced and properly aligned.
  6. Attach each square to the box using hot glue or spray adhesive, then repeat this process for every other side.
  7. On the top face, trim away any paper that overlaps the head opening, but leave the squares covering the arm holes intact.
  8. Choose whether to arrange the colors identically on all sides for a solved look or mix them up for a scrambled appearance.
