Directions

  1. Start by cleaning your pumpkins with a moist cloth to eliminate grime and waxy coatings. Let them dry fully. For artificial pumpkins, adding a thin layer of matte white paint enhances realism and provides a better surface for the gold leaf.
  2. Using a brush or foam applicator, spread a thin and equal coating of adhesive or Mod Podge on the spots you’d like gilded. Choose from three styles: just the top for a dipped appearance, scattered areas for a distressed metal vibe, or the whole surface for a dramatic golden pumpkin. Wait until the adhesive feels tacky, typically around 10 to 15 minutes (check the manufacturer’s guidelines).
  3. Lay a gold foil sheet carefully over the sticky area. Wrinkles and small rips add character, so don’t stress about them. Use a dry brush or your fingertips to gently press the foil onto the adhesive. The metallic layer will bond as if by enchantment.
  4. After the foil is firmly attached, dust off any extra bits with a soft, dry brush. This reveals a gorgeous weathered gold design that sparkles in the light. For additional intensity, apply a second foil sheet and repeat the previous steps.
  5. For outdoor decoration or long-term reuse, mist the pumpkins with a clear acrylic sealer. This prevents the gold from fading and gives a gentle satin sheen.
