You'll need
Directions
- Sketch a radiating star pattern encircling the stem, then slice along your marks to separate the lid from the main body.
- Hollow out the fibrous interior using a serrated scraper, being sure to save the seeds for later. Scrape away every bit of pulp and strands until the inner walls are clean and dry.
- Prepare your chosen design by cutting away the shaded portions to create a stencil. Printing this pattern on heavy cardstock will make tracing significantly easier.
- Position the stencil against the pumpkin's surface and trace the outline of your chosen artwork.
- Begin carving the design using a precision craft knife. First, lightly score all the traced lines to establish a guide for your blade. Then, use gentle, consistent back-and-forth sawing motions to achieve sharp, clean edges.
- Dab a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol to gently erase any remaining pen or marker lines from the pumpkin's skin.
- Place a traditional flame or an LED light inside the hollowed gourd to complete your festive decoration.
