Try this creative twist on Halloween pumpkins—drill holes for a unique glowing effect.
Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at littlethings.com.
I used a real pumpkin, a 5/16 inch drill bit, and a random dot pattern to create a drilled pumpkin light. After cleaning and drilling, I added a candle for a warm glow. This project is quick, fun, and results in a beautiful Halloween decoration.
You'll need
Directions
- Select a real or fake pumpkin. I used a real one. You can pick any shape; I chose a classic round one. I also grabbed a backup pumpkin in case I messed up my first attempt.
- Wipe the outside of the pumpkin with a rag to remove any mud or dirt that might clog the drill holes.
- Pick a drill bit. I chose a 5/16 inch bit because it was small enough to avoid making huge holes but large enough to let plenty of light through.
- Decide on a hole pattern. I went with random dots, but you could try diagonal lines or spirals. Use a washable marker to mark where you want each hole.
- Cut the top off the pumpkin like you would for a regular jack-o'-lantern, keeping the opening small so you can drill as many holes as possible.
- Scoop out all the insides thoroughly. Smooth the inner walls so no strings of pumpkin guts block the holes you'll drill.
- Have someone hold the pumpkin steady. Place the drill on each marked dot and bore through. It's quick and creates perfectly round holes.
- After drilling, wipe the outside of the pumpkin with a rag to remove any pumpkin goo that stuck to the surface.
- Scrape out the inside again with a spoon to remove any loose flesh that could clog the holes.
- Place a light source inside. I used a candle that was big enough to shine brightly through the holes. Light it and put the lid back on.
- When it's dark, take your pumpkin outside and set it up to show off the glowing effect.
