Tips
- Pick a pumpkin with smooth, less bumpy skin, avoid heavy ones (thick walls), skip soft spots (rot), inspect for nicks/cuts, and pick one with a flat front surface.
- Don’t rush, use small controlled motions, choose a well-lit location with a sturdy work surface, keep hands and tools dry, and leave the pumpkin top on to avoid putting hands inside.
- Never let a young child carve alone; supply older children with age-appropriate tool kits and supervise closely.
- Choose an easy design using stencils with large cutting areas or use cookie cutters to indent patterns for younger kids to trace.
- Keep kids occupied with decorating small pumpkins (glitter, rhinestones) while adults carve to keep them out of harm's way.
- Clean up quickly by laying down newspaper or a drop cloth to prevent slips from slippery pumpkin flesh or seeds.
- Skip traditional candles and use flameless LED lights to reduce fire risk.
