Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at houseofnasheats.com.
This layered Halloween Jello recipe uses orange, grape (colored black), and white cream layers to build a striking striped dessert. You can make a single large pan or two smaller ones, then slice into cubes or squares. The process requires patience to set each layer but results in a fun, festive treat.
Ingredients
Directions
- For the orange layer: Bring 1 cup of water to a boil in a microwave-safe bowl (about 2–3 minutes). Stir in one 3-ounce box of orange gelatin and 1 teaspoon (half of a .25-ounce envelope) of unflavored gelatin powder until fully dissolved.
- For the black layer: Boil another cup of water. Dissolve one 3-ounce box of grape or black cherry gelatin and 1 teaspoon of unflavored gelatin powder in the hot water. Stir in black gel food coloring drop by drop until the mixture reaches your desired shade.
- For the white layer: Boil 1 cup of water and dissolve one .25-ounce envelope of unflavored gelatin powder in it. Stir in half a can (7 ounces) of sweetened condensed milk until well combined.
- If using a single 9x13-inch dish, pour all of the orange (or black) gelatin into the pan. Refrigerate on a level surface for 20–30 minutes to set, while the white layer cools to room temperature.
- Once the bottom layer is firm, carefully spoon or pour about 3/4 cup of the room-temperature white mixture over it. Return the pan to the fridge to set for another 20 minutes.
- Repeat the process: add a layer of the contrasting color (if you started with orange, use black next, etc.), then another white layer. Continue alternating until all gelatin is used. You may need to prepare fresh batches of the colored gelatins as you go so they don't set at room temperature.
- Alternatively, for two 8x8-inch pans (one with orange on top and bottom, the other with black on top and bottom): divide the first orange layer between the two pans, and similarly divide the first black layer. Chill both for 20–30 minutes. Then add white layers followed by contrasting color layers until all mixture is used.
- Once fully set, slice into 1-inch cubes to serve as finger food, or cut into larger squares and top with whipped cream for a plated dessert.
