This project turns a simple green zip-up hoodie into a cute dinosaur costume for kids. You'll cut felt triangles into scales, sew them into the back slit, and add fun eyes on the hood. It's an easy sewing project perfect for Halloween or dress-up.

You'll need

Directions

  1. With a sharp pair of scissors, snip up the center of the sweatshirt's back, stopping at the hood's peak.
  2. Create a cardboard triangle template measuring about 3 inches across and 3.5 inches tall. Use a chalk pencil to trace it onto a dark green felt quarter, producing as many scales as needed to cover the slit down the back.
  3. Cut a second triangle template that's half an inch smaller in width and height. Trace it onto light green felt with chalk, creating double the number of small triangles compared to the large ones.
  4. Align the bottom edge of a light green triangle with the bottom edge of the dark green one, then add another light triangle on the opposite side so the dark piece is sandwiched in the middle. Secure with pins. Do this for every set of triangles.
  5. Stitch the three layers together using matching green thread, then take out the pins.
  6. Pin the completed scales along the slit on the back of the hoodie, spacing them about 1 inch apart.
  7. Sew along the pinned line, and then remove all pins.
  8. Using sharp scissors, snip out two oval shapes from yellow felt, each about 1.5 inches long. Next, cut two orange circles a bit smaller than the oval width for the irises. Finally, cut two black circles slightly smaller than the orange ones for the pupils.
  9. Stack the felt pieces to make two eyes, then pin one eye to each side of the hood.
  10. Stitch around the pupils using black thread, fastening all three layers to the hood. Do the same for the second eye, then remove the pins.
