This ladybug costume uses a red sweatshirt decorated with black felt spots and a tulle skirt attached to an elastic waistband. The skirt is made by layering red and black tulle strips and sewing them to the band. A green felt leaf accent on a headband completes the look.

Directions

  1. Start by washing the sweatshirt to prevent shrinkage. Use a round object like a lid or can to trace circles onto black felt with a chalk pencil, then cut them out with sharp scissors. Pin the felt circles randomly on the front and back of the sweatshirt, sew around the edge of each dot, remove pins, and snip loose threads.
  2. Measure around the child's waist and cut a piece of 1-inch-wide black elastic to that length. Cut two 20-inch strips of black ribbon. Fold one ribbon over each end of the elastic, pin in place, and sew securely.
  3. Using sharp scissors, cut the red tulle into 10-inch-long strips (adjust length for smaller or older kids) and the black tulle into 8-inch lengths. For efficiency, stack 8 layers of red tulle and 2 layers of black tulle and cut them together. Gently ruffle the layers with your fingers and sew them directly to the bottom edge of the waistband.
