Learn how to transform simple soup into a spooky kid-friendly treat using edible cutouts and creepy garnishes like ghost-shaped toast and spiderweb cream swirls.

You'll need

Tips

  • Any kind of tortilla or shape of cookie cutter works for the soup toppers.
  • Red Leicester cheese is particularly good for pumpkin toasts because of its orange colour.
  • Any fresh herb leaf can be used to cut the pumpkin stalks.
  • If you don't have a tiny circle cutter, the end of a drinking straw does the same job.
  • Drawing a spider's web on soup looks really effective and is much easier than it looks.

The plan

  1. Start with a plain bowl of healthy soup as the base, then decorate the top just before serving.
  2. Keep Halloween-themed cookie cutters (including mini ones) and an edible marker pen to hand.
  3. Have mozzarella pearls, cucumber, natural yogurt and a cocktail stick ready for the eyeball and spider web bowls.
  4. For piping yogurt, use a mini sauce bottle, a piping bag, or a plastic food bag with the corner snipped off.

Decoration ideas

  • Serve the soup with a fun monster spoon as the utensil for a Halloween touch.

Food & drink

  • Halloween-shaped tortilla toppers: cut shapes out of a tortilla wrap with a cookie cutter (white tortilla ghosts were used) and pop them on top of the soup just before serving; add dots for eyes with an edible marker pen.
  • Cheesy pumpkin toasts: toast a piece of bread, top with red Leicester cheese (its orange colour suits pumpkins), and grill until melted and bubbly; once cooled a little, cut pumpkin shapes with a mini Halloween cookie cutter, cut stalks from a mint leaf (any fresh herb leaf works) with the same cutter, and press the back of a knife blade into the cheese to make the pumpkin lines.
  • Edible eyeball soup: use mozzarella pearls (sold ready-shaped) as eyeballs; cut a small hole in the top of each pearl with a tiny circle cutter, cut small plugs from the side of a piece of cucumber with the same cutter, and push them into the holes skin-side up.
  • Spider web soup: draw a spiral of natural yogurt on top of the soup, then draw a cocktail stick through it from the middle to create the radiating lines of a web.
  • Tortilla spider crisps: cut spider shapes from a wholemeal tortilla with a cookie cutter, brush them with oil, sprinkle some with poppy seeds, and bake in the oven for about 5 minutes.

Activities

  • Dress up a plain bowl of healthy soup with Halloween shapes and characters that children will enjoy eating.
  • Reuse the tortilla cookie-cutter trick year-round for stars, smiley faces, animals, dinosaurs or whatever a child is into.
